Aston Villa to scrap Tiago Ilori's loan deal and send him back to Liverpool

Aston Villa are ready to scrap Tiago Ilori’s loan deal and send him back to Liverpool without the defender making an appearance.

Ilori is set to have his season’s loan ended prematurely by the Premier League’s bottom club after the Portugal under-21 international failed to impress Remi Garde.

Liverpool have the option to recall him in January and Villa aim to reach a compromise and free up a loan space for new signings in the transfer window.

Villa have conceded 34 goals in 19 league games this season but are focused on bringing in attacking players, ensuring that Ilori is surplus to requirements.

It represents another disappointment for the 22-year-old, who has never featured in the Liverpool first-team since arriving at Anfield from Sporting Lisbon for £7million in 2013.

Shortly after signing, the Football Association announced they were keen to fast-track him into the England set-up as he was born in London before moving to Portugal.

But it has been a difficult spell in this country and he was highlighted as a prime example of the poor spending under former manager Brendan Rodgers.

Signing Ilori was former manager Tim Sherwood's bright idea

The move to Villa appeared to suggest a fresh start and Garde's predecessor Tim Sherwood admitted the signing of Ilori was a “no-brainer”, comparing him to Liverpool’s Emre Can due to his versatility.

But he has only played for Villa’s under-21s and Ilori’s return to Merseyside will increase scrutiny on Villa’s own transfer committee, following a summer recruitment drive which resulted in 12 new players coming in.

Garde is now focused on making further signings as he plots a strategy for survival.

Garde is determined to revitalise his ailing squad in the January transfer window

He said: “This group hasn’t been together for a long time, which is probably not the best thing you can have for a football team.

“You always have to build something to be solid, and if you look at the story of this football club there has been a lot of changes, and important ones, for the last years and many in the summer as well.

"The team has to build a new story and, of course, in a team, you need some leaders.

“We need now to all be on the same ‘up level’, which has not been too often the case except maybe in the West Ham game, when everybody was really at 100 per cent.”
