Liverpool news: Defender Martin Skrtel sidelined for six weeks after picking up hamstring strain in Watford defeat

Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel has been ruled out for six weeks with a hamstring strain.

Scans on the injury Skrtel suffered against Watford on Sunday confirmed the lay-off and the defender took to Instagram to clarify how long he would be out.

“After all rumours going around I want to say after I suffered tear in my hamstring and tendon I will be out for six weeks,” Skrtel said.

The knock rules the 31-year-old out of the first leg of the Capital One semi-final against Stoke City on Jan 5 and the Anfield return three weeks later. He will also miss the FA Cup third-round tie at Exeter on Jan 8 and the visits to Anfield by Arsenal on Jan 13 and Manchester United four days later.

Manager Jürgen Klopp is now short of defenders for the visit of Leicester City on Boxing Day, although there is more encouraging news regarding Dejan Lovren.

The Croatian is recovering from the gashed knee he suffered against West Bromwich Albion 10 days ago, and may be fit to slot back in alongside Mamadou Sakho. If he does not make it, Kolo Touré is on standby. Liverpool have no plans to sign a defender next month to cover for Skrtel’s absence.

Midfielder Emre Can is adamant the club can still finish in the top four, despite their recent run of poor Premier League results.

“It is our goal to play in the Champions League next season,” Can told German magazine Kicker. “The season is still long and a lot of things can happen. We lack a bit of consistency. We have shown really good football every now and then during the past two months. It is not that nice to play against us.”
