Wireless provider Fido is offering home internet services in Ontario in an effort to distinguish itself from competitors and attract millennial customers.
Its new service, begun Thursday, is aimed at young consumers who are most likely to use streaming media, including Netflix or movies.
Fido customers on a wireless contract get 300 Gigabytes of streaming, enough for about 60 HD movies for $50 a month. Unlimited services cost $65 a month.
For non-customers or Fido customers without a contract, the same package is $70 a month or unlimited for $85 a month.
The package price includes the Wi-Fi modem and support, as well as download speeds up to 30 Mbps and upload speeds up to 5 Mbps.
A Fido spokesman emphasized the easy setup, geared to millennials who can't stay home to wait for installation.
The modem comes by courier, can be plugged into a wall anywhere near co-axial cable and then has do-it-yourself setup to connect wirelessly to your cellphone or computer.
One limitation is that internet is offered only within the Rogers service areas in Ontario, roughly London to Ajax, Ont., and Ottawa.
Young consumers are an important market, but they tend to be fickle, seeking the best package or best deal for evolving wireless and internet service needs. New rules from the federal wireless regulator governing contracts have made it easier for them to move on.
A Fido spokesman said the addition of internet service is in part a tool to retain millennial customers.
