Workers at Google have proposed a set of new emojis - including female engineers, farmers, plumbers and chemists - aimed at promoting workplace gender equality.
The tech giant submitted 13 new emoji designs to the Unicode Consortium, which oversees the creation of new emojis.
The four-strong team said the emojis depict "a wide range of professions for women and men, with a goal of highlighting the diversity of women's careers and empowering girls everywhere".
The proposed emojis are: doctor, nurse, scientist, graduate, office worker, IT worker, factory worker, assembly line staff, mechanic, farmer, chef, teacher and singer.
Each of the new professions depicted would be available in both male and female forms.
The submission quoted a widely shared opinion piece recently published in the New York Times called Emoji Feminism.
The article said: "Where, I wanted to know, was the fierce professor working her way to tenure? Where was the lawyer? The accountant? The surgeon?
"How was there space for both a bento box and a single fried coconut shrimp, and yet women were restricted to a smattering of tired, beauty-centric roles?"
Existing male emojis include a police officer, a construction worker, a detective and Santa Claus.
Meanwhile female emojis are more limited, and include a woman having a haircut, and a woman in a wedding dress.
The Unicode Consortium decides which emoji ideas are implemented, and is made up of 11 voting members including Google, Microsoft, Apple and Facebook.
The Google team said it would like to get the emojis approved by the end of the year.
Their submission added: "We believe we can have a larger positive impact by adding 13 new emoji that depict women across a representative sample of professions.
"We believe this will empower young women (the heaviest emoji users), and better reflect the pivotal roles women play in the world."
