Gareth Bale is edging ever closer to a sensational move to Manchester United, according to ESPN sources.
According to the report, the Real Madrid superstar is United's top target with the club unlikely to be able to prise Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford.
The story adds that United have received 'significant encouragement’ over their pursuit of the Wales international.
Bale has struggled to settle in Spain and has never fully adapted to life at the Bernabeu.
It is thought that if a big Premier League club came in for him, and a big-money offer too, that both Real and Bale would be open to agreeing a deal.
It is thought, however, that Real would be unwilling to sell both Ronaldo and Bale next summer and if Ronaldo was to end his spell in Spain, Bale would not be allowed to leave.
One player who appears to have closed the door on a switch to United is Southampton striker Graziano Pelle.
Pelle has been on United's radar but the Italian hinted recently that he could leave England at the end of the season as he is homesick.
The report in the Express quotes Pelle as saying: “My contract [at Southampton] expires in 18 months, one year after Euro 2016.
“Italy is the most beautiful country and it is that beauty which I’m missing.
“Serie A lost some of its appeal, but lately it is growing again, it is visible abroad. They didn’t care about Italy abroad, I felt that, but thanks to Juventus in the Champions League and others in the Europa League, Italian football is back and in a few years it will be one of the best again.”
Pelle joined Southampton from Feyenoord in 2014 and scored 12 goals in his debut Premier League season.
This season, he has scored six goals in 12 appearances.
Finally, United are confident they will complete the signing of Mario Gomez in January.
The 30-year-old would bring vast experience to United who are struggling for goals this season. Gomez is currently on loan at Bestikas from Fiorentina and has hit nine goals in 15 games this season.
According to Turkish outlet Fanatik, United believe they will tie up a deal for the German in the next transfer window.
