Jermain Defoe and Sebastian Larsson could be the biggest casualties of Sam Allardyce’s bid to overhaul his Sunderland squad in January.
Allardyce has been told by owner Ellis Short that he will have limited transfer funds to spend in the next transfer window, but can also use any money he brings in or frees up.
Allardyce is well aware that he is working on a shoestring budget this winter
Defoe joined Sunderland on a £60,000-a-week contract in the last January window, but Allardyce could let him leave either permanently or on loan to free up space on the club’s wage bill for new signings.
Big Sam is still weighing up a move for free agent Kevin Nolan
Bournemouth could be alerted to Defoe’s potential availability, while Sunderland are among the clubs considering a January move for Queens Park Rangers striker Charlie Austin, who is also wanted by Aston Villa.
Midfielder Larsson has also lost his starting place under Allardyce and the Sweden international could demand a respectable fee for the Sunderland manager to add to his transfer kitty.
Other than looking at ways of raising extra cash, Allardyce is also still considering whether or not to sign free agent Kevin Nolan, who was released by West Ham in the summer.
