Kate Winslet says she signed up to The Dressmaker because she read the script and thought it was "bonkers".
The Oscar-winning star takes on the role of Tilly Dunnage in the film adaptation of Rosalie Ham’s debut novel.
Winslet said the script felt "wild" and quite "liberating" to be a part of.
Set in 1950s Australia, The Dressmaker is about a seamstress who returns to her rural hometown to investigate how she ended up being banished as a child.
The film is a black comedy that takes some dark detours - and Winslet told Sky News she found the tone of the movie completely refreshing.
"It’s a fable, it’s not real, and so within that there is lots of creative, artistic license that can be taken - for example Hugo Weaving plays a cross-dressing policeman who gets arrested wearing a matador outfit - it’s just fantastic," she said.
Winslet decamped to Australia to film the movie, which is one of the country’s most successful box office hits in recent years.
It also has received critical acclaim, leading the field at the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards with 12 nominations.
Winslet admitted she occasionally struggled with mastering her character’s Australian accent.
"I love doing accents - some of them are harder than others - and this kind of Australian was quite hard as it isn’t too heavy, there is a lightness to it," she said.
