Arsène Wenger, the Arsenal manager, is considering making a surprise bid for Javier Hernández, the Bayer Leverkusen striker, according to a report in the Daily Star.
Hernández joined the Bundesliga club in the summer after Louis van Gaal, the Manchester United manager, deemed the Mexican surplus to requirement at Old Trafford relying instead on Wayne Rooney, Memphis Depay and Anthony Martial.
However, while United's strikeforce has floundered, Hernández has scored 19 goals in 21 appearances following his £7 million move to Germany.

Sources close to the player claim Hernández is ready to return to the Premier League and Wenger is understood to be lining the Mexico international up as cover for Olivier Giroud.
Another high-scoring player Wenger is understood to be interested in is Riyad Mahrez, the Leicester City winger, according to the same report.

The Algeria international, though, has already suggested he wants to complete the season with Claudio Ranieri’s side who are currently two points ahead of Arsenal on the top of the Premier League table.
Mahrez, 24, joined Leicester for £400,000 from Le Havre almost two years ago but is now valued at around £25m.
Noilto, or Manuel Agudo Durán to give him his full name, may see his move from Celta Vigo to Arsenal smoothed by Joel Campbell's transfer in the other direction, according to Don Balon, the Spanish website.
The website claims that both Arsenal and Barcelona are interested in the 29-year-old forward, but the north Londoners are leading the way in negotiations and are offering Campbell and "a good sum of money".
Finally, the Daily Mirror is reporting that Mohamed Elneny's proposed move to the Emirates Stadium from Basel will mark the end for for Mathieu Flamini, Mikel Arteta and Tomas Rosicky as the club looks to take the ageing midfielders off its payroll.
