January transfer window opens in
And, although Wenger stopped short of confirming the signing of the Egypt international, the manager did reveal that reinforcing his midfield will be the priority during January.
Following Leicester’s 0-0 draw with title rivals Manchester City, Arsenal remain top of the Premier League table going into the New Year and the Frenchman says he needs to add to his squad to maintain his side’s challenge in the Premier League, the FA Cup and Champions League.
When asked directly about the club’s move for Elneny, he said: “You know more than I do. Unfortunately we cannot announce anything at the moment about this player because nothing has been concluded.”
But he was more open as he discussed his plans for the transfer window. He added: “I'll be busy, that's for sure.
Elneny is imminent. Can you feel it?
“I am already busy and I said already one month ago we are a bit short to deal with all the competitions we face, especially in midfield. We will be busy, yes.”
Wenger also confirmed that there could also be outgoings next month, with Mathieu Debuchy’s future at the club still uncertain.
The right-back, who has been usurped by the brilliant Hector Bellerin, has made just two Premier League appearances all season and knows that a lack of game time could hamper his chances of securing a place in the France squad for the summer’s European Championships on home soil.
Mathieu Debuchy could be on his way out of the Emirates
“It is not impossible,” Wenger said, when asked whether Debuchy could leave. “I’m happy if he stays but we will see.”
Arsenal host Newcastle on Saturday but are likely to remain without talismanic Chilean Alexis Sanchez although holding midfielder Mathieu Flamini should return following an ankle problem.
