Michael Jackson's album Thriller has broken records in the US after selling 30 million copies three decades after its release.
The figure was confirmed by the Recording Industry Association of America which said the singer is the first artist to receive 30-time multi-platinum status.
Thriller has been an even bigger seller overseas, with 100 million copies of the album sold since its 1982 release.
Jackson's music experienced a surge in popularity after his unexpected death in June 2009.
Thriller includes the hits Beat It, Billie Jean and the title track.
John Branca, co-administrator of Jackson's estate, said Thriller remains the yardstick against which all albums are measured.
He says the album is special because Jackson wrote it to appeal to broad audiences, which helped fuel international sales.
"It is crystal clear that Michael Jackson is simply the greatest, and biggest, artist of all time," LA Reid, chairman of his label Epic Records, said.
Adele recently set the record for fastest sales in the US since at least 1991, with her album 25 selling more than five million copies less than a month since its release.
