Jetstar ‘took off with too many passengers’

Jetstar is being investigated.

JETSTAR’S procedures are under investigation following two incidents last month that were deemed serious by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB).

On both occasions, the planes took off with more passengers than the pilots had expected, putting the lives of all at risk.

The first incident happened on October 19, when a Jetstar A320 was being prepared for a flight between Brisbane and Melbourne. As passengers were boarding, the crew were told of a discrepancy at check-in and were informed that 12 passengers were still to board. Later, they were told the issue had been resolved.

However, after a count of those on-board, the crew discovered there were 16 more passengers than advised, and the plane was approximately 1328 kilograms heavier than the takeoff weight that was input into the flight data for takeoff.

The weight was recalculated for the landing in Melbourne.

Then, on October 29, a Jetstar A321 aircraft due to fly between Melbourne and Perth was too nose-heavy on takeoff. The pilot had to pull back on the controls almost to the limits in order to get the nose pointing up.

When the crew calculated the passenger numbers and seating locations they found that the plane was outside the loading limits for takeoff and landing. Passengers had to switch seats in order to balance the weight to acceptable limits.

Both planes landed safely and there were no injuries.

A Jetstar spokesperson told news.com.au: “We’re investigating these events and working closely with the ATSB to assist with its inquiries.

“Since these incidents took place in October, we have put additional measures in place to check our flights have been loaded correctly and that aircraft weight and balance is properly accounted for.

“We’ve had no flights operate with this type of error since we introduced these measures.”

The full ATSB investigation is not expected to be complete until October 2016.
