One of the world's most successful games developers has apparently been banned from accepting an award for his title Metal Gear Solid V.
It is the latest stage of an apparent relationship breakdown between legendary developer Hideo Kojima and games publisher Konami.
Mr Kojima was due to appear at The Games Awards but host Geoff Keighley said: "Mr Kojima had every intention of being with us tonight.
"But unfortunately he was informed by a lawyer representing Konami just recently that he would not be allowed to travel to tonight's award ceremony to accept any awards."
Kiefer Sutherland, who voiced one of the characters in the console game, accepted the award on Mr Kojima's behalf instead.
While critics have hailed the game as a "masterpiece", claims have been made in recent months that Mr Kojima has clashed with Konami's management.
It is due to a reported power struggle with bosses during the lengthy development of the latest Metal Gear title.
It resulted in some senior employees of his studio having access to their emails, phone calls and corporate internet restricted.
A collaboration between Mr Kojima and film director Guillermo del Toro was later cancelled, and Mr Kojima's name was even removed from the game's box art.
The New Yorker report says he has a non-compete clause that expires in December, meaning he would likely have to wait until 2016 to join a rival company.
Sky News has contacted Konami for comment.
