Rio 2016 glory looms for long jumper who at last proved she can do it on biggest stage

Off the track the Stepanovs and Hajo Seppelt are undoubtedly the heroes of the year, but on it I would pick Shara Proctor.

I have watched Shara for many years and she has always had the talent to succeed without really producing it on the big stage. She just seemed to struggle to produce her best when the pressure was on.

But her performance in jumping more than seven metres and breaking the British record in Beijing was fantastic.

Going into the competition I obviously wanted her to do well, but could not help thinking that maybe she has not got it when it matters most.

She completely turned it around, though, and jumped her best ever at a championship when she had previously tended to do it at smaller meets.

She was only a fraction away from winning gold and is now right in the mix going into the Olympics.

I hope Shara will take great confidence from her performance and it will give her the boost to go away and train even harder with the aim of becoming Olympic champion next year. It is a real possibility and with Lorraine Ugen and Katarina Johnson‑Thompson we could have three long jumpers in the top eight with all of them in the mix for medals.
