Trumbo Leads Screen Actors Guild Nominations

A movie about a blacklisted 1940s Hollywood screenwriter has become an Oscars favourite after netting the most nominations from the Screen Actors Guild (SAG).

Trumbo received nods in three categories: best ensemble cast, best leading actor for Bryan Cranston and best supporting actress for Helen Mirren.

Cranston, who starred in Breaking Bad, plays Dalton Trumbo, who was shunned for communist associations, while Mirren stars as a conservative gossip columnist.

Mirren is a double SAG nominee, also in the running as best actress for her role in Woman in Gold, about an elderly Jewish woman trying to reclaim art stolen by the Nazis.

But there were surprise snubs for Matt Damon in The Martian, Sylvester Stallone in Creed, Jennifer Lawrence in Joy and Will Smith in Concussion.

Quentin Tarantino's Western drama The Hateful Eight also came away empty-handed.

In the best actor category, Cranston is up against Johnny Depp (Black Mass), Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant), Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs) and Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl).

Among the women for best actress, Cate Blanchett was nominated in Carol, Brie Larson for Room, Saoirse Ronan for Brooklyn and Sarah Silverman for I Smile Back.

The top winners at the SAG awards, chosen by more than 100,000 actors, often go on to win Oscars.

The list was announced a day ahead of Thursday's Golden Globe nominations and January's nominations for the Oscars.

Nominations for best ensemble cast went to Beasts of No Nation, a war drama about child soldiers in Africa, and Straight Outta Compton, which charts the rise of hip hop group N.W.A.

Both productions, which feature black male casts, were picked at a time when Hollywood has been criticised for lack of racial diversity.

Beasts actor Idris Elba landed a best supporting actor nod, as well as a best leading TV drama actor nod for Luther.

In the television categories, fantasy saga Game of Thrones, spy thriller Homeland and political drama House of Cards led the way with three nominations each.

British period drama Downton Abbey was also nominated for best drama ensemble.

Maggie Smith won an outstanding performance nod as the dowager countess.
