THE death of a man who fell from a unit in the Q1 building yesterday left a sombre mood for many in Surfers Paradise ahead of Australia Day today.

Residents in the Q1 and surrounding towers yesterday described the awful screaming and crashing noise and the images they now wish they could forget, after the man’s body crashed to the ground on Hamilton Avenue around 2pm in full view of holiday-makers here for the national holiday.

Many were horrified a dismembered limb remained on top of a glass awning on the Hamilton Avenue entrance of the building until sundown, in full view of the street and surrounding buildings.

Police yesterday said they were treating the “tragedy” as non-suspicious and had been working to cover the man’s body from public view but safety issues had prevented them covering the limb.

“We always try to cover things like this from the public and also out of respect for the deceased, but the glass roof area is quite high up and it is a safety issue,” a police spokesman said after a crime scene was established at the site.

A Q1 Skypoint employee, who asked not to be named, ran outside to help other staff, was sickened by the scene.

“I wish I could forget what I saw,” she said.

“Other staff ran out and covered the body until police arrived later.

“I can’t really process what has happened.”

The general manager of Longboards Laidback Eatery and Bar Justin Allie said he heard a crashing noise and ran out the back of his restaurant.

“I think this is the third time something like this has happened at the Q1,” he said.

“It’s really sad, and being the middle of the day there’s lots of people around.

“It’s a catastrophe whenever anything like this happens.”

Holiday-maker Frank Mercuri said a lady who was in the pool area saw the man fell and “just went white” and was so distraught her husband escorted away to find help.

“What she described was like the footage from 9/11,” he said.

“It just makes us so sad this has happened.”

Another Victorian holiday-maker, Bruni Gissara, said police were checking rooms on level 66 of the building, where guests believed the man fell from.

Q1 staff refused to confirm which level the man fell from and whether he was a resident or guest.
