Bournemouth are on the brink of smashing their transfer record with a £10million swoop for Benik Afobe, the Wolverhampton Wanderers striker.
Afobe is expected to complete his move to the Premier League club over the weekend, with Bournemouth close to agreeing a fee with Wolves.
Eddie Howe, the Bournemouth manager, has been determined to sign a proven forward in the January transfer window after losing Callum Wilson for the season with a serious knee injury.
And Howe has moved swiftly for Afobe in a bid to fend off competition from Norwich City and is hopeful of making the 22-year-old his second signing this month.
The former Arsenal forward has been in and out of Kenny Jackett’s team in recent weeks but has still scored ten goals this season for the Championship club.
It was always feared he would be leaving in January after Norwich had a succession of bids rejected in the summer but Bournemouth appear on course to sign him.
Any deal for Afobe will top the previous transfer record which was the £8million paid out for Tyrone Mings, who joined from Ipswich Town in June.
Howe has already captured Roma’s Argentine winger Juan Iturbe on a loan deal which will run to the end of the season.
He said: "It's a difficult window for us as we've been hampered by injuries in key areas. It's a seller’s market and we'll wait and see but as like most clubs find it, it is a difficult window to recruit in.
