Cable Network Al Jazeera America Shutting Down

Cable news network Al Jazeera America has announced it is shutting down, less than three years after it was launched.

Employees were informed during a staff meeting on Wednesday afternoon that the channel will close by 30 April.

The Qatar-based Arab-language broadcaster launched its US channel in August 2013, but it struggled to pull in audiences.

Al Jazeera America chief executive Al Anstey wrote in an email to staff that "our business model is simply not sustainable".

"I know this will be a massive disappointment for everyone here who has worked tirelessly for our long-term future," he wrote.

"The decision that has been made is in no way because AJAM has done anything but a great job."

The channel was available in about 60 million American homes, but its primetime ratings barely reached 30,000 viewers, according to Nielsen.

Al Jazeera America found a slot on cable after snapping up former US Vice President Al Gore's Current TV in January 2013 for a reported $500m (£346m).

The news channel was rocked last year by claims that a culture of fear ruled the newsroom, along with allegations of sexism and anti-Semitism.
