Singer-songwriter Don McLean has been charged with domestic violence assault following an incident at his home in Maine.
The American Pie singer was arrested at his home in Camden at about 2am on Monday, the local Wiscasset Newspaper reported.
He was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Knox County jail.
McLean, 70, was released a few hours later after posting $10,000 bail.
He is charged with domestic violence assault - a misdemeanour. No other details on his arrest have been released.
McLean achieved global fame in 1971 with his hit American Pie, about the deaths of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper in a plane crash in 1959 - The Day The Music Died.
He sold the original manuscript of the famous lyrics at auction last April for $1.2m (£840,000).
The musician has continued to regularly produce albums over the decades but has not repeated his 1970s chart success.
McLean was inducted into the Songwriters' Hall of Fame in 2004.
His next live performance is scheduled for 27 January in Chicago, according to his official website.
He is slated for an Australian tour beginning in March.
