Liverpool on brink of signing Red Star Belgrade midfielder Marko Grujic

Grujic is due to fly to Liverpool on Monday to complete the formalities of a £5 million transfer. Liverpool intend to complete the deal this month before enabling the midfielder to return to Belgrade for the remainder of the season. He will then officially become a Liverpool player in the summer.

January transfer window closes in

Grujic was extensively scouted by the Merseysiders, who outbid CSKA Moscow and Zenit St Petersburg to secure the youngster.

On their last trip in December, representatives from Liverpool watched the youngster score in a 7-2 win over Cukaricki in Serbia’s Super League.

Grujic has made no secret of his attraction to English football, where he has previously hinted Chelsea would be his favoured destination. However, until Liverpool’s intervention, it was believed Inter Milan were leading the pursuit.

“The Premier League is a league where I’d like to play, and my favourite club abroad is Chelsea,” the youngster was quoted saying last summer.

Grujic once named Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic as his idol. “Because of the position I play and because of my physique, I am 192cm tall, people compare me with Matic. I must say he’s my role model. I study him carefully whenever I watch Chelsea play.”

Despite those comments several months ago, it is believed that the personal intervention of Jürgen Klopp was influential in convincing Grujic to head to Anfield.
