Manchester United transfer news and rumours: Louis van Gaal closes in on 'the next Cristiano Ronaldo'

Manchester United are closing in on the latest player to be dubbed "the next Cristiano Ronaldo".

Louis van Gaal is desperate to bring some pace to the United set-up and Benfica winger Goncalo Guedes ticks just that box.

The young Portuguese player has been watched by United scouts and, according to Shoot, Van Gaal has given the green light to sign the player.

Arsenal are also keen on signing the 19-year-old, so Van Gaal is well aware that he has a battle on his hands.

But fear not Manchester United fans, if you don't manage to sign the next "Best Footballer in the World" there is always Will Keane, who Van Gaal has just recalled from his loan spell at Preston in the bid to find goals.

Keane signed a season-long loan deal with the Championship side, but has asked the Dutch manager if he can return to Old Trafford to prove himself in the Premier League.

Van Gaal met Keane on Tuesday and, after listening to the 22-year-old plead his case, agreed to bring him back into the United fold.

That decision comes with United having scored just 10 goals in their last 14 games with Robin van Persie, Radamel Falcao and Javier Hernandez all departing last summer.

But how has Keane done at Preston, you may well be asking.

He has scored two goals in 22 appearances. Just what United need then. Another misfiring frontman.

January transfer window opens in

Lastly in this first 2016 edition of Manchester United transfer nonsense, goalkeeper Sam Johnstone has gone the other way as Keane, waving at him on the way to signing for Preston on a one-month loan deal.

Johnstone enjoyed a successful loan spell at the club last year, helping them gain promotion to the Championship and the 22-year-old has now gone back to his hometown club for a month.

Yet to play for United, Johnstone was on the substitutes' bench for the first six matches of the season while David de Gea was the subject of speculation linking him with a move to Real Madrid.

Sam Johnstone wants to play football

"I'm delighted to be back and hopefully I can start playing some games," he said.

"It's great to be around the team at Manchester United, they are the biggest club in the world but, at the end of the day, I'm 22 years old and I have to think about myself a little bit and I need to be playing first-team football.

"I get to do that now in the Championship which is a great league to play in."
