Zayn Malik has revealed he "never really" wanted to be in One Direction and had thought about leaving from the first year.
In his first broadcast interview since he walked away from one of the biggest pop groups in the world last March, the star said he "gave it a go, because it was there at the time".
One Direction was put together by Simon Cowell on The X Factor in 2010.
Malik told Zane Lowe for Apple's Beats 1 that he soon realised the band wasn't for him when he saw what direction the music was going in.
He would write music for himself during that time because he knew the day would come when he would tell Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne and Niall Horan that he was done.
"I think the boys kind of knew, that in terms of the music, that wasn't my cup of tea. They knew that, they were aware of that, always."
In the interview, which took place in a sports stadium in his native Badford, Malik revealed that his bandmates would try to make changes to accommodate his R'n'B style and ideas.
But he said they didn't try to talk him out of leaving the band.
"When I was leaving the band, they obviously didn't want me to leave, but they couldn't talk me out of it. I'd already made my mind up."
Malik's first solo single, Pillow Talk, is released on 29 January, with a new album coming in March.
The full interview will air on Thursday during Lowe's show at 5pm in the UK on Beats 1.
