THIS latest design is taking aircraft seating to the next level offering “super throne” suites for business and first class passengers.
Conceived by innovation group, Formation Design, the proposed suites will sit above traditional seats in a bunk bed like formation. The elevated seats would fold out into flat beds with the layout allowing the airline to accommodate more passengers in their premium cabins.
The design would also allow for bigger beds and direct aisle access for all seats, however overhead lockers would need to be removed from that section of the aircraft.
According to the designs, on a Boeing 777 eight of the 32 seats would be forward facing “throne seats” while the remaining 24 would be smaller, traditional seats. On an Airbus aircraft, four of the 32 seats would be elevated “throne” seats.
A number of airlines including Etihad, Emirates and Singapore Airlines, already offer first-class seating within suites but the extra capacity provided by this new design will be a lucrative proposition to airlines.
Formation Design were short-listed for the 2016 Crystal Cabin Awards and are currently looking for airlines or seat manufacturers to license and co-develop the idea. The winners will be announced on April 5.
