A wild elephant that went on the rampage in a village in the Indian state of West Bengal has been captured.

The elephant had crossed into the path of people from the Ektiasal village of Siligui after straying from a nearby forest.

Its loud roaring woke up residents in the early hours of Wednesday.

For the next seven hours, the animal went on to damage houses, vehicles and shops until it was cornered in the local market and tranquilised.

A senior local government official said the elephant had become confused by the crowds.

"We have tranquilised the elephant now, we gave him four tranquiliser shots," he said.

"Because of the commotion here the effect of tranquilliser was less and we had to give him a greater dose.

"The elephant is stable right now. We will take him with us and release him in the Sukhna forest."

The elephant will be thoroughly checked over before being released into the wild.

Elephant attacks in eastern India are on the rise with environmentalists saying one of the main reasons is due to the destruction of natural animal habitats and the blurring of animal and human living space.
