Rio Ferdinand: 'I used to take the mick out of Cristiano Ronaldo' at Manchester United

Former England centre-back Rio Ferdinand has said that Cristiano Ronaldo was the butt of dressing-room jokes when the Portuguese played at Manchester United last decade.

Ferdinand was responding to Ronaldo's assertion that he and his old Manchester United teammates rarely spoke off the pitch.

After seeing Ronaldo's comments, Ferdinand said on BT Sport: "He's gone off me! He used to live next door to me. Unbelievable! He didn't like my cooking.

"I actually used to take the mick out of him in the changing rooms, I think he's got the hump.

"He used to come in in tight jeans and we used to murder him. He didn't get it."

Ronaldo's point nevertheless stands - that the brilliantly effective Sir Alex Ferguson side of the late noughties did not need strong off-field friendships to ensure cohesion or success.

The culmination of Manchester United's success while Ferdinand and Ronaldo were at the club was the 2008 Champions League final triumph over Chelsea.

Speaking to the press yesterday, he said: "When I was at Manchester United, winning the Champions League, with some players such as Giggs, Ferdinand and Scholes, our discussions were limited to ‘Good morning’ and ‘Good night’.

"But when we were on the pitch together, there was total understanding."
