ONE of two women found unconscious in a Cairns hotel pool has died in hospital while the other is continuing to fight for her life.
The pair were found unconscious in the water at Trinity Links Resort in White Rock last Thursday just minutes after posing for a photograph.
Both were resuscitated at the scene by CPR from bystanders and paramedics and were taken to Cairns Hospital. It is believed one of the women, aged about 50, died in hospital yesterday, while the other is in a critical condition.
Cairns police Senior Constable Russell Parker said investigations are under way and a report would be prepared for the coroner following the woman’s death.
The women were visiting the Far North from Western Australia with a large group of family members.
It is believed they were Australian citizens, although originally from Vietnam.
“This is indeed a tragic incident involving visitors to our region, and one which highlights the importance of water safety and just how vigilant we all need to be with water based activities,” Sen-Const Parker said.
The Cairns Post understands neither of the women had been strong swimmers, but had decided to take an early morning dip together. They had asked a staff member to take a photograph of them and he returned a few minutes later about 7.20am and found them both underwater.
The incident has baffled police.
The employee, believed to be a groundsman, dived in and pulled them both from the water. Hotel staff and residents have been praised for their action at the scene performing CPR.
