Air Canada CEO hopes to finalize CSeries deal 'soon'

The head of Air Canada said Friday the airline hopes to confirm its order for Bombardier's CSeries passenger jet shortly.

The airline said back in February it would buy up to 75 of Bombardier's latest jet.

"Subject to final documentation and satisfaction of conditions, we look forward to firming up the order soon," Air Canada CEO Calin Rovinescu said today during a conference call with analysts, according to Reuters.

That news came a day after Bombardier announced that U.S. carrier Delta Air Lines Inc. had agreed to buy up to 125 of the CSeries jets, the biggest order yet for the program.

Meanwhile, shares of Air Canada were up sharply  after the company reported an unexpected profit for its first quarter.

The company said it posted an adjusted profit of $85 million, or 30 cents a share. According to Bloomberg, the average of analyst forecasts had projected a loss of 19 cents a share for the quarter.

The airline said its operating revenue came in at $3.34 billion, up from $3.25 billion a year earlier.

Air Canada shares were up $1.05, or more than 12 per cent, at $9.33 in late morning trading Friday on the TSX.
