British TV channel ITV rumoured to be interested in Canadian distributor Entertainment One

Shares in Canadian-based entertainment conglomerate Entertainment One were up 13 per cent on the stock market Thursday after a report suggested British TV channel ITV was considering buying the company.

Entertainment One, or eOne as it is often called, makes some of its own content but is primarily a distributor of more than 40,000 television shows and movies including the rights to franchises The Hunger Games, the Walking Dead TV show and the Twilight saga.

eOne recently signed content deals with Steven Spielberg's DreamWorks and Jeff Skoll's movie studio Participant Media to license their content.

Last fall, the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board paid roughly $290 million for an 18 per cent stake in the company.

According to Bloomberg, British broadcaster ITV, which among other titles broadcasts titles like Coronation Street and Downton Abbey, has made overtures about buying all or part of eOne, which trades on the London Stock Exchange but has its origins in Canada.

Bloomberg cited unnamed sources "with knowledge of the situation" in its story.

On Thursday, eOne put out a statement denying any negotiations were underway.

"Entertainment One notes the press speculation regarding a potential offer," the company said. "No approach has been received by eOne."

Shares in eOne were nonetheless up about 20 pence to 1.78 pounds in London on Thursday. The company's shares have lost about half their value in the past year after disappointing earnings results.
