A US man filmed a deadly tornado as it approached his home, and killed his wife.
Clem Schultz didn’t listen to warnings about the tornado that hit his Illinois home in April last year.
The 85-year-old told Illinois’ The Daily Herald he was upstairs in his home when he looked out of his bedroom window and saw the huge tornado approaching.
Schultz filmed the storm, expecting that it would not hit his neighbourhood.
Instead, the dramatic video shows the massive tornado heading straight for the area.
Schultz filmed the tornado as it passed right through his home.
On the footage, the tornado passes through, as the video turns black, with howling wind the only sound heard.
Schultz said that he didn’t have enough time to get back downstairs to where his wife, Geri, was located, while he reportedly felt there was no use going down into his cellar, which he said was “roughly the size of a furnace”.

Schultz told the newspaper that he rode the debris from the collapsing chimney down and lost his grip on the phone. He said he then became entangled in a bed sheet before getting buried in debris.
Schultz said his neighbour helped dig him out of the rubble and sat him down on one of the house’s beams, warning him not to “look down”
Schultz said he asked why and was told by his neighbour that his wife was underneath him dead.
A photograph of the couple was later found 60 kilometres away after being carried by the storm to a nearby town.

Schultz said he also thought the couple’s dog, Missy, suffered the same fate as his wife, but the canine was later found by the family after an extensive search.
Schultz said in the interview that he is comforted by the presence of his dog and that he refuses to let anyone get near her, but the loss of his wife is hard to bear.
“I’ll be watching TV, and something comes on that needs a comment, and she [Geri Schultz] is not there,” Schultz said. “But Missy’s always there.”

Schultz told the newspaper he is planning to return to the area for a memorial on April 9, the first anniversary of the storm.
He said it took him a long time to watch the footage.
“I did not know if I wanted to see that video,” he said.
He said he eventually watched it, before sharing it with a meteorology student who included it in his doctorate studies about the internal structure of tornadoes.
“I’m proud of it,” Schultz said. “My video is saving lives.”
