Dresses made from plastic bottles, gladiator gowns and frocks adorned with LED lights helped A-listers to shine at an exclusive launch party for a museum exhibit in New York.
This year's Met Gala saw the likes of Lady Gaga, Emma Watson, Madonna and Katy Perry add a futuristic touch to their red carpet outfits.
Although Beyoncé was among the 600 guests at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, wearing a peach-hued latex gown by Givenchy, her husband Jay-Z did not attend - amid rumours of infidelity in their marriage.
The hi-tech theme for this year's fundraiser for the museum's Costume Institute was to celebrate a new exhibit on fashion in an age of technology, considering the relationship between machines and humans when creating couture.
Every attendee was carefully selected by Vogue's editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, and it is believed that tickets were sold for £20,500 - or £188,000 to splash out on a table.
Madonna's black dress was particularly revealing, exposing her thong and barely covering her breasts.
Meanwhile, Katy Perry's black velvet Prada dress boasted gold embellishments and a Tamagotchi digital pet in acknowledgement of the technology theme.
Two dresses which shone out from the night, quite literally, were worn by Homeland actress Claire Danes and Karolina Kurkova.
The Czech model's stunning gown was fitted with 150 LED lights which changed colour - and according to Kurkova, the fact a battery pack kept her warm was an added bonus.
Danes went for a dove grey Zac Posen dress which was made from fibre-optic woven organza sourced from France - and eager-eyed fans may have noticed the designer tweeting updates as he tested the gown and added those all-important final touches.
Idris Elba and Taylor Swift were among the co-hosts at the glamorous event, with the British actor taking some time to offer sartorial advice for men getting ready for a big night out.
"Take your time," the Luther star said. "Make sure your shirt's down and the whites of the cuffs are out."
Whereas many celebrities on the red carpet were eager to provide detailed explanations about the look they had chosen for the evening, some stars preferred to be more direct.
When Kanye West was asked about the thinking behind his ensemble, a Balmain jewel-embellished denim jacket with ripped jeans, he simply said: "Vibes."
