BEHIND closed doors at hotels you can discover all sorts of secrets, according to inside accounts from those in the hospitality industry.
Hotel employees have spilt the beans on what guests get up to when they stay the night.
When hotel workers were asked on Reddit, ‘What is the strangest thing you’ve seen guests doing?”, they gave some interesting answers.
Here are seven of the strangest things those in the industry have seen:
STICKY FINGERS
A restaurant worker in a fancy restaurant at a hotel in Los Angeles said guests — after spending “several thousands of dollars on dinner” — would take the salt and pepper shakers, plates and cutlery.
The same hotel employee said a CEO of a large TV company would ask to have a tray of cookies sent to the room every night. “She would chew every one of them only to put them back on the tray,” the Reddit user said.
RELATIONSHIP CRISIS
One hotel worker was asked by a woman if she could use the workout room around 11pm.
When they returned around 3am to close it, the woman had set up a bed for herself on the treadmill.
The hotel worker said: “Ended up giving her our last room, after she had a fight with her husband and was refusing to sleep with him”.
TOILET BUBBLES
A clerk at the front desk of a hotel wrote about a woman who worked as part of a land survey crew.
One time the woman went to the front desk and said there were bubbles in the toilet.
The hotel worker said they told her “they might have flushed the water pipes”. The woman then said: “Hold on, I’m going to bring some down,” while the clerk said, “Ma’am, that’s really not necessary”. About five minutes later the guest came to the front desk with a wineglass full of clear water.
She said: “Well, it was bubbly a minute ago!”.
PARKING CONFUSION
A hotel receptionist once had a couple check in and the pair were given a park and display permit for their car.
“About 40 minutes later the husband comes to reception shouting and complaining that he’s received a parking ticket and the permit he was given was obviously no good. We couldn’t understand why, there was no way the permit wasn’t valid. We asked, did he display it in the window as we had told him to do?”
The man said he had displayed the ticket. “He put it in the window as soon as he got upstairs to the room. That’s when we realised he’d put it in the bedroom window and not the car window,” the Reddit user said.
SPIRITUAL PURPOSES
A front desk worker writes how a “nice couple” came to check in and they were asked the routine question about what brought them to the area for their stay.
“Completely straight-faced, the lady replies, ‘We are here to conceive our child in the name of Jesus Christ’. I tried not to make a big deal out of it and moved on, but I was shocked.
“I wasn’t there for check-out, but heard it went smoothly without any interesting remarks.”
SAD ENDINGS
A valet who worked at a fancy hotel in Virginia said one evening a “really nice old couple” arrived in their car. Later that night, they had dinner and drinks out on the town and returned to the hotel.
The next morning, the first person to the room found a note on their door that said: “Do not enter, call the police”.
One of the old people was diagnosed with a terminal, incurable disease and they decided to “both go out together after a nice evening, instead of letting the disease win”.
The valet said after this happened, the next weekend the room was reopened and “no one even knew that it happened”.
SPOOKY WALLS
A guest came down to a hotel worker to report that the words “I’m watching you” were written on the wall with a glow-in-the-dark pen. The guest was allowed to change rooms.
The Reddit user said a previous guest must have had a dark sense of humour.
