TERRIFYING footage shows the moment a passenger plane was forced to abort landing just metres off the runway due to extreme winds.
The footage, filmed over two minutes, shows the Monarch plane being thrown from side to side in strong winds as it tries to land at Manchester airport.
Lurching from side to side in the high winds, the plane attempts to touch down on the runway as amateur photographer Simon Whittaker films.
But as the Airbus nears the tarmac, the plane is hit by a fierce gust and is blown violently to the side, at which point the pilot pulls up and ditches landing.
Manchester Airport said five planes due to land on Sunday were diverted to other airports due to extreme weather conditions.
Three landed at East Midlands Airport and two went to Birmingham.
On Sunday, when the footage was taken, the Manchester region was battered by gusts of up to 130km/h — causing failed power lines and serious damage to numerous buildings.
Simon, who was on his way to a hotel at Manchester airport when he spotted the plane trying to land, told the Manchester Evening News: “The weather was dreadful and treacherous at the airport.
“It was difficult to even hold the camera still such was the strength of wind.”
He suggested passengers on board the Monarch flight must have been “scared” as “it was all over the place in the air”.
The airport said diversions were in force for around 30 minutes yesterday and it is not known whether the Monarch flight caught on film was involved.
An airport spokesman said today’s conditions are not as bad and there have been no repeats of yesterday’s issues.
