Star man

Mesut Ozil. On course for an all-time Premier League record of assists and, more even than Alexis Sanchez, has been the inspiration behind Arsenal entering 2016 at the top of the table.

Ozil: Physically incapable of stopping creating things

Flop

Mathieu Debuchy. Unhappy at losing his place to Hector Bellerin but has done nothing in the few matches that he has played to suggest that Arsene Wenger was mistaken. Could leave in January.

Manager performance

There remains a big divide among fans about Wenger but the club are top and still in the Champions League and have done that with the fourth biggest budget in the country. B+

Is team improving, or getting worse?

Improved since last season but there has been a dip in performance levels since the wins against Manchester United and Bayern Munich.

High point

Beating Bayern Munich, Manchester United and Manchester City at the Emirates were all special but winning 3-0 away at Olympiakos to stay in the Champions League was the peak.

Virgil Van Dijk's headed goal for Southampton was judged offside

Low point

Saturday’s 4-0 loss at Southampton. It was a slip to suggest that Arsenal might just have already missed their opportunity to open a significant gap on City.

Biggest strength

The attacking variations that are supplied by Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez as well as the goalkeeping of Petr Cech. Three players who could grace any team in Arsenal’s history.

Biggest weakness

The holding midfield position now that Francis Coquelin is out with a cruciate ligament injury. Much will depend on Mathieu Flamini, Calum Chambers and potential of Mohamed Elneny.

Fans' mood

Happiest and most optimistic for some years but could turn quickly and few still truly dare to believe that this really will be Arsenal’s year.
