Star man

Where would United be without David De Gea? Mid-table? After his attempts to leave for Real Madrid in the summer the goalkeeper has got back in the team and performed brilliantly with some extraordinary saves.

Flop

Wanted: The return of the past

Memphis Depay has undoubtedly been a huge disappointment since his big-money move from PSV Eindhoven but he is young and new to the league and the focus is rightly shifting to Wayne Rooney who is woefully out of touch and appears short of fitness.

Manager performance

Louis Van Gaal is fighting to save his job and fighting to convince himself he can do it. He looks a broken man at times. At other times he comes out fighting. He is erratic and struggling. Like his team. D

Is team improving, or getting worse?

Undoubtedly getting worse. Have slid to sixth in the table, eight games without a win and lacking in confidence.

High point

Anthony Martial’s goal, dribbling his way through to score with skilful aplomb, after coming on as a substitute to make his debut in the 3-1 victory over Liverpool in September. He announced himself to English football.

Low point

The goalless, soulless draw at home to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League. United did not lose but never looked like winning on a horribly flat European night as they went through the motions.

Biggest strength

Name, reputation, huge financial resources. United are a money-making powerhouse and one of the biggest clubs in European football. They have a firm foundation on which to base themselves if they can.

Not everything at Old Trafford is this man's fault

Biggest weakness

Lack of identity, lack of a plan of where the club wants to be on the field and what it wants to be. It is not all Louis Van Gaal’s fault and United need to look at how the club is run. But he is not helping.

Fans' mood

Mutinous, disillusioned, upset but not necessarily angry. Desperate for a sign that United will return to their traditions of playing attacking football. Unsure of what direction this is heading and wanting to see change.
