Fans at the TCL Chinese Theater in Los Angeles cheered as familiar characters including Han Solo and Chewbacca appeared on screen.
Disney screened the seventh episode in the franchise at three Hollywood cinemas on Monday night to around 5,000 guests.
The premiere featured red carpet arrivals flanked by Stormtrooper costumes and Star Wars memorabilia.
Critics are unable to post reviews of the film until Wednesday due to an embargo, but film writers took to Twitter to voice their support for the new film.

Rebecca Keegan, LA Times film writer, wrote: "Story, character, design, humour -- #StarWars fans, this is the movie you're looking for."
Adam Vary, senior film reporter for BuzzFeed, wrote: "Rest easy. #TheForceAwakens is 100% #StarWars, and something new. Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac: welcome."
Jen Yamato, entertainment reporter for The Daily Beast, tweeted: "The Force Awakens is soooo Star Wars, and Daisy Ridley is the business, and #StarWars."
The Force Awakens opens to the public on Friday and has already broken pre-sale ticket records.
