Nintendo developers have filed a patent for a console game controller made out of a screen.
The application describes a video game controller with a large elliptical front-facing panel which is a touchscreen.
It has two holes punched in it for analogue sticks to poke through, and the document even says that glasses-free 3D technology could be used with it.
The controller also has two triggers and shoulder buttons, and includes a speaker.
It was filed under the name of Masato Kuwahara, who was behind the GameBoy Camera and Nintendo DSi.
He and his associates listed a number of uses for the technology, including adding ambient fire effects around the analogue sticks during certain scenes in a game.
It could also have non-game uses, like showing an internet browser in the middle of the screen with controls around one of the sticks.
While many patents do not make it into production, Nintendo has shown a strong interest in touchscreen technology before.
Last year Japanese news agency Kyodo reported that the gaming company would be the first customer for Sharp's Free-Form Displays.
These can be cut into a wide variety of shapes, and production was reported to be planned for early 2016.
The Wall Street Journal also said Nintendo's upcoming NX platform would include both a console and an independent mobile device that could work alone or in conjunction with the main unit.
