WHILE maybe not surprising, it seems strange that the Russian Federation would pass domestic law to place itself beyond the reach of international law.
Russia wishes to be given due respect by other nations, especially those in the West. Wouldn’t Russia wish to grow its standing as a law abiding nation and responsible world citizen?
From a young age we taught both Jack and his sister to take responsibility for their actions. If they had done something wrong we expected them to own up to it, even if it was hard. As parents we worry if our children lie or blame others or avoid responsibility in other ways.
If we require responsibility from our children, how much more should we expect it of powerful nations?
In late October, Metrojet Flight 9268 crashed in Egypt, killing all 224, mostly Russian passengers and crew on board. When it became clear that terrorists were responsible for this atrocity, President Putin was resolute in his determination they would be held accountable. “We will hunt them everywhere, wherever they are hiding. We’ll find them anywhere in the world and we’ll punish them.”

Mr Putin also called on other nations to recognise this principle of accountability. Russia “counts on all our friends” to help in hunting down those responsible, the Russian President was quoted as saying’.
We, along with the other families of those killed on Flight MH17, don’t have whole armies and intelligence services to find and hold to account the people who shot down MH17. These people killed our beloved son, and there seems little we can do, apart from speak. We must rely on the observance of international law and the willingness and determination of all involved to apply that law to the highest standard.
Why would Russia act in this way? In our experience it is not the innocent, but the guilty who seek to avoid accountability. This looks like Russia has something to hide and is worried what the evidence will reveal.
It makes us angry that Russia acts with such disdain for the people we love. Jack and all the people on MH17 deserve justice. All the available evidence should be weighed and if the people who are responsible are convicted by a court with appropriate jurisdiction, then that judgment should be respected.
That is what Russia wants for its murdered citizens, and that is what they should seek for all those killed on MH17.
