WTF? World Taekwondo Federation set to rebrand itself to avoid dubious initials

The long battle between kicking-based Korean martial arts and the shorthand of contemporary youth culture has finally resulted in a win by knockout.

The secretary general of the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) confirmed to website insidethegames.biz that a phasing-out of the initialisation is part of a "five-point development roadmap" for the sport's future.

Hoss Rafaty, who was appointed as the head of the WTF earlier this year, insisted that they will retain the rights to the name but that a rebrand to World Taekwondo was necessary to "to develop a consistent and easily recognisable brand name".

For the uninitiated, WTF also acts as social media shorthand for the incredulous phrase "what the f***", so commonplace now that taekwondo's powers that be felt compelled to distance themselves from it.

The issue was raised at the body’s extraordinary council meeting in Mexico City earlier this month, resulting in the renaming of The World Taekwondo Grand Prix and the World Taekwondo World Championships. Whether the likes of the French Federation of Speleology or international computer industry standards consortium Object Management Group will follow suit remains to be seen.
