WARNING: Graphic.
Incredible pictures have shown what happens when a bird collides with a passenger plane, and it’s not pretty.
An Air Namibia flight experienced a “bird strike incident” on Thursday of last week, leaving the aircraft with significant damage.
Images shared on Twitter by a passenger on the flight show a large hole ripped through the A319-100 aircraft’s underbody panels. With feathers hanging from the torn metal sheets, the surrounding outside panels are left covered in what appear to be smears of blood.
A spokesman for the airline confirmed with a local online news service a “big bird” had collided with one of the company’s planes as it began to make landing.
“Bird strikes are common during landing and taking off of an aircraft because these are the times when the aircraft is flying in the ranges when bird are also flying,” Paul Nakawa told The Namibian.
“Regarding this recent incident, a big bird hit one of our four A319-100 aircraft that services our regional routes just when it was about to land. It left one of the underbody panels of the aircraft damaged.”
The aircraft, which was carrying up to 112 passengers, made a safe landing and repair works promptly began.
The airline has apologised to passengers, Mr Nakawa said, as well as for the affect on scheduled flights. The incident affected departure times with the affected plane out of service.
