Derby head coach Paul Clement is set to sign Reading striker Nick Blackman in another statement of intent by the Championship high-fliers.
Blackman was in talks with Derby on Tuesday and is on the verge of completing a £2million move after snubbing Sheffield Wednesday.
The 26-year-old will become the second new signing of the January transfer window for Derby, with chairman Mel Morris continuing to back Clement as the club aims for the Premier League.
Blackman is Reading's leading scorer with 11 league goals and out of contract in the summer and Derby have moved swiftly despite interest from promotion rivals Wednesday.
Clement has already signed Guinea international Abdoul Camara from French club Angers and is believed to be working on further signings this month.
Derby are currently second in the Championship after one defeat in the last nine league games, last weekend at Middlesbrough.
"We are doing our due diligence behind the scenes over where we might need to strengthen," said Clement.
"We will decide whether we want to hit the switch or stay as we are."
