IT’S the sign with a glaring spelling error that greets interstate travellers but authorities have refused to take responsibility for it.
A mysterious sign saying State “Boarder” Queensland was put up in Kent St, Coolangatta a week ago, sparking outrage from residents who have demanded it and its unwanted “a” be removed immediately.
To make matters worse, both the Gold Coast City Council and the State Government have blamed each other for the failure.
A spokesman for the Department of Main Roads said Kent St was a council road which meant the department was not responsible for signs.
However, a council spokeswoman said the sign was a State Government responsibility but confirmed it was “investigating” the issue.
Until authorities discover who is to blame for the error, nearby residents will have to put up with the dodgy welcome to Queensland.
“I have a son with a disability and he said, ‘Mum, they spelt that wrong’,” said Sandra Hurt, who lives near the sign.
“I just think with today’s technology that there can be a flaw like that is amazing — there must have been a lot of people looking at it.
“If they are going to do signage, at least spell it right.
“I just want them to change the sign but it’s been up there for a week and no one has done anything.”
