A MASSIVE Gold Coast ‘Oz Day Float Party’, that went viral on Facebook, has been cancelled amid police fears it could explode into alcohol-fuelled violence.

The event — boasting giant inflatable toys, slip and slides, DJ turntables and eskies filled with booze — was planned for Currumbin Creek on the southern Gold Coast on Australia Day next Tuesday.

More than 4500 people had been invited on Facebook but police said they feared the event, organised by three young southern Gold Coast flatmates, could spiral out of control and turn to chaos.

Organisers this morning posted on Facebook that the event has now been cancelled.

The shut down occurred a week after another Facebook-organised Australia Day event was also cancelled over similar fears.

Some 26,000 people had indicated on Facebook that they would attend the Triple J Hottest 100 party at St Kilda, in Melbourne.

The young organisers of that party decided to can the event after receiving a Facebook message from Victoria Police asking whether they had the correct council permits to hold the celebration.

Party planners Jai Motherwell and Clint White later wrote on Facebook that they had decided to shut the event down.

“The numbers have blown way out of proportion and you can’t trust 20,000 strangers to do the right thing,” Mr Motherwell posted.

The Sydney event called Floatopia had more than four thousand people interested in attending, but it was also axed. However, it was cancelled following a series of angry outbursts on social media and what organisers said was “mean spirited behaviour” including racism.

It followed a heated to and fro online between people who were looking forward to attending Floatopia and others who were variously concerned with issues such as littering.

Some questioned whether it was appropriate to hold the event on a public holiday that marked the beginning of colonisation in Australia.

Twitter has created an Australia Day Emoji ahead of January 26.
