Astronaut Tim Peake is to become the first Briton to carry out a spacewalk, NASA has confirmed.
Major Tim will venture outside the International Space Station on Friday 15 January to help replace a voltage regulator and lay electric cables.
He will be joined by NASA astronaut Tim Kopra.
Tim Peake tweeted: "I am thrilled to be assigned a spacewalk in 10 days. Lots of work to do before Tim and I can open the hatch."
The spacewalk is scheduled to start at 12.55pm (UK time).
The two astronauts will venture into the vacuum of space through the Quest airlock.
After adjusting over several minutes to the disorientating movement of planet Earth below them they will then crab along the ISS exterior for roughly half the length of a football pitch to reach the broken voltage regulator.
NASA hasn't revealed how long the spacewalk is likely to take, but is expected to give more details in a news conference next Tuesday.
Astronauts rehearse for spacewalks in NASA's deep water pool in Houston and with virtual reality headsets.
Every step of the spacewalk has been carefully planned and will be choreographed by the Spacewalk Director in mission control.
Before his launch last month, Tim Peake said he was "most looking forward to" a spacewalk.
"The opportunity to do a spacewalk is hugely exciting. That comes with many technical challenges.
"The spacesuit is a mini space station. It has to keep you alive for up to eight hours outside the space station and it takes a lot of work and knowledge to operate it."
