After 90 minutes on a bog of a pitch, they came close to a miracle. Even the late arrival of Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo could not find a winner for the visitors. Indeed, but for referee Howard Webb missing Gerard Pique's handball in the closing moments, the Staffordshire club's fans might have been hailing an astonishing win achieved via the penalty spot. As it was, several hundred United supporters applauded the home side off the pitch. For the replay at Old Trafford, Clough again said his team didn't have a prayer.
