US Military Wants To Link Brains And Computers

The US military is developing a brain implant known as "wetware" that could allow computers to directly communicate with the organ.

The implantable technology would allow users to operate and control computers with the power of thought.

The US military's research and development organisation - the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) - launched the research programme on this week.

Researchers have attempted something similar in the past, with limited success.

DARPA says current "wetware" technology is dated, likening it to "two supercomputers talking to each other using an old ... modem".

Programme manager Phillip Alvelda said: "Imagine what will become possible when we upgrade our tools to really open the channel between the human brain and modern electronics."

DARPA says it wants to work with leaders in the science and technology fields, and will meet with key researchers in February.

As well as uses in the military, the technology could one day restore vision to blind people.

This would involve a camera transmitting visual information directly to the brain.
