Treat players with respect their status deserves
Rafa Benitez’s days were numbered when he started due to his distant relationship with players. Carlo Ancelotti may have been criticised by the media for having a ‘soft hand’, yet he was immensely popular in the dressing room. Zinedine Zidane’s achievements as a player will grant him an aura but he must reciprocate it by getting the players on his side like the avuncular Italian did.
Build the team around James Rodriguez
The Colombian has been unable to show his true worth because the team is still heavily weighted towards the front three. The 24-year-old showed his explosive qualities at the World Cup in a side built around him, and with an ageing Cristiano Ronaldo set to leave soon, its time to construct a new look side around Rodriguez.
Strike a balance between attack and defence
'Equlibrio' was Ancelotti’s word of choice at Madrid such that it became a running joke, but Madrid’s collapse against Barcelona displayed a glaring lack of balance. So Zidane will be expected to delight the Bernabéu again, he needs to ensure his flair players respond to their defensive duties.
Be ready to rotate to avoid burn out
Keeping a squad brimming with global stars is an age-old problem for any Madrid coach but players such as Toni Kroos and Sergio Ramos have dipped in form due to playing too often, and in the latter player’s case, when injured. Zidane has the most expensively assembled squads in the world at his disposal — he should make use of it.
Ignore the president’s wishes and play the most in form players
The Frenchman ignored Perez’s wishes to play teenage sensation Martin Odegaard every week last season for Castilla and named his son Enzo his captain to the chagrin of Perez. Yet his stubbornness has done him no harm. He should continue to be his own man and drop the unconvincing yet expensive Danilo for homegrown favourite Dani Carvajal and let the results do the talking.
