Zuckerberg: Don't Marry A Nerd - Be One

Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg has advised women not to date nerds if they want to be successful - but to be nerds.

It comes after a grandmother posted on Facebook that she tells her granddaughters to "date the nerd in school" because he may turn into the next billionaire.

In a response to a New Year post from the tech tycoon, Darlene Hackemer Loretto commented: "I keep telling my grand daughters to Date the nerd in school, he may turn out to be a Mark Zuckerberg!"

Mr Zuckerberg replied: "Even better would be to encourage them to *be* the nerd in their school so they can be the next successful inventor!"

More than 27,000 Facebook users liked his reply, including Karen Capasso-Fortney who said: "Mark Zuckerberg you are so right #nerdsrule"

L Ann Kenney added: "Good answer ... we need more girls/women in technology and science!"

And Lindsey Pearlescent Wells said: "Yes. Always encourage young girls to grow up to become the successful ones, not just marry the successful men."

The Facebook chief executive recently celebrated the birth of his daughter Max with his wife Priscilla Chan.

In December he posted a picture of the couple reading a book called Quantum Physics For Babies to their newborn.

He recently started a Facebook trend after posting a picture of Max dressed up as a Jedi, which prompted other new dads to follow suit by posting images of their own baby daughters in Star Wars outfits.

Facebook has reportedly been trying to recruit more women into an industry that is dominated by men.

Last year, a report by research firm Gartner found that the number of women in key roles in the technology industry had remained roughly unchanged for 10 years, with females occupying just 11.2% of technology leadership roles in Europe.

According to job site CWJobs, the average pay for an IT worker in the UK is £52,500, with women in the UK earning an average of £24,500 for full-time work, according to the ONS.
