BlackBerry is laying off an unspecified "small number" of employees in Waterloo, Ont., where the company is headquartered and in Sunrise, Florida.
The company has also reportedly parted ways with Gary Klassen, creator of BlackBerry Messenger.
According to a BlackBerry statement, "a small number of employees have been impacted in Waterloo and Sunrise, [Florida]." The company wouldn't specify how many.
The SunSentinel newspaper in Florida reported that BlackBerry filed a notification with the state to lay off 75 workers between Feb. 5 and Feb. 26. BlackBerry would not confirm that number to CBC, despite requests by phone and email.
The statement from the company reads:
"As BlackBerry continues to execute its turnaround plan, we remain focused on driving efficiencies across our global workforce. This means finding new ways to enable us to capitalize on growth opportunities, while driving toward sustainable profitability across all parts of our business. As a result, a small number of employees have been impacted in Waterloo and Sunrise, FL. It also means that BlackBerry is actively recruiting in those areas of our business that will drive growth. For those employees that have recently left the company, we know that they have worked hard on behalf of our company and we are grateful for their commitment and contributions."
BlackBerry hasn't confirmed whether or not Klassen was among the cuts in Waterloo.
However, Klassen's wife Jenn posted a photo of herself and her husband to her Facebook account earlier today, with the caption, "My husband has walked out of BlackBerry for the last time!"
