FC Midtjylland vs Manchester United: Fans protest at £71 ticket prices - but Danish club say they are a bargain

Midtjylland have been accused of "exploiting" Manchester United fans by charging them £71 each for a ticket to Thursday's Europa League match in Denmark.

Around 800 United fans have had to pay the premium rate for the first leg of the second-round match at the MCH Arena.

One United fan, Thomas Kearney, will unfurl a banner at the stadium that has: 'WELCOME TO SCAMDINAVIA' written on it in black and white letters.

It also highlights the fact that Southampton supporters were charged just £22 when they played at the home of the Danish champions in the Europa League play-off round in August.

Southampton supporters were not fleeced in the same way

Kearney said: "I feel frustrated, exploited and astonished by the prices.

"What is especially annoying is that a ticket for Southampton fans back in August cost £22 - a 223 per cent price increase.

• What happened to Manchester United's Class of 92?

"I had bought flights and accommodation in advance (of the ticket price announcement), so what other option was there (but to attend)?

"We only paid slightly more than £71 for the three away Champions League group games this season, which puts the price into perspective.

Louis van Gaal's team start their Europa League campaign on Thursday

"I think I can speak for everyone on this though, trips following the Reds are too enjoyable to pass up.

"We could boycott, but what use would that be if there are many more who are willing to snap up the tickets, especially those in Scandinavia who'd happily take up the opportunity to watch United in that part of the world.

• United appoint Butt as head of their academy system

"But hopefully by the picture of our banner being posted across Twitter, that will encourage others to follow suit.

"Hopefully this will get some coverage and pressurise Uefa - it won't come from the clubs - to step in and put a cap on these ludicrous prices."

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (right) is confident United will progress

It's been reported that United complained to Uefa about the ticket prices, but ultimately could not get them reduced.

And Claus Steinlein, chief executive of FC Midtjylland, has suggested the demand to see the fixture justified a massive price hike.

He said: "Generally speaking you could say that we could have sold more than 50,000 tickets for this game. So if you look at supply and demand perhaps the price should have been even higher.

"That's the cost of watching a game like this. So I actually believe that we have been very fair and we certainly haven't had any problems selling the tickets.

"Normally we have journalists criticize us for not making enough money and when we put the prices up the same journalists criticize us for making too much.

"We'll have a sold out stadium and an excellent setting. That's what players, coaches, all of the club and all of our region is looking forward to. It's going to be a day to celebrate so let's rather focus our energy on that."

With United now six points outside the top four, manager Louis van Gaal concedes his team may have to win the Europa League to qualify for the Champions League next season.

And former United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, now manager of Norwegian club Molde, believes his old team have little to worry about in their second-round tie.

• United should hire Sherwood not , says Paul Parker

"Maybe Midtjylland have a one or two per cent chance (of progressing)," Solskjaer, who famously scored an injury-time winner for United in the 1999 Champions League final, told Midtjylland's website.

"But there is a chance, that's the thing. I think you have to go in with that belief that maybe this is that miraculous day."

United fly to Denmark on Wednesday to finalise preparations for the first leg.

Van Gaal's squad will train on the grass surface at the stadium after the manager gives his pre-match press conference at 5pm GMT.

Temperatures of around -2 degrees Centigrade are expected when the match takes place on Thursday even though kick-off is at 7pm local time (6pm GMT).
