THIS is the hair-raising moment a plane flies close to the heads of sunbathers at a packed beach.
The incredible footage was filmed by a holiday-maker as the jet prepared to land on one of the “scariest” runways in the world on the Caribbean island of St Maarten.
Maho Beach is one of the world’s best plane-spotting locations, and is flooded by thousands of thrillseeking tourists every day who stand under the flight path as jets come in to land.
In the clip, the plane is seen approaching the shore before the camera pans out and shows it fly close over the beach, which is teeming with holiday-makers. Beach-goers can be heard shouting and screaming as the jet’s engine roars loudly as it passes just centimetres from their heads.
The beach is right next to Princess Juliana airport, the second-busiest in the eastern Caribbean. Its runway is less than half the length of those found at many international airports.
With the busy beach just outside the airport’s boundary it offers a challenge to pilots flying aircraft such as the Boeing 747 seen in the video.
But it’s not plane sailing for the thousands of spectators who fill the beach on a daily basis. There are signs warning holiday-makers that jet blast from arriving and departing planes can cause serious injury or even death.
Some daredevils have been known to hold on to a chain-link fence when a jet prepares for takeoff, so they are blasted by the engines and lifted off the ground.
