Islamic State's English-language reach on Twitter has stalled in recent months, according to a new report.
Accounts being suspended by the social network have limited the group's growth and in some cases devastated the viral reach of users, according to the report from George Washington University's Program on Extremism.
The number of "easily discoverable" English-language accounts supporting the group was usually under 1,000, the report said, and they were mostly used to interact with similar accounts.
Also, the average number of tweets per day across the lifetime of each account went down from around 14.5 in June to just 5.5 in October.
The average number of followers was between 300 and 400, the report said.
Twitter has been criticised for its lax approach to policing the site, which is used by Islamic State to publicise executions and boast about military victories.
JM Berger, co-author of the report, agreed Twitter had been lagging behind its rivals in policing content but said some of that was due to its relative youth as a company.
He added: "Each company has been dragged into this kicking and screaming."
But Twitter announced last week that it had suspended 125,000 accounts associated with the terrorist group during the past six months.
The research was carried out prior to the Paris attacks, which the report's authors said probably led to a large number of suspensions mostly in French and Arabic networks.
